D'CLUTTERING YOUR KITCHEN IN 5 DAYS [How to]

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in our home....

It's the place we prepare our meals for our families, gather and discuss our day, drink coffee with our spouse, sip wine with our girlfriends and entertain family and friends. After looking at it that way, we can all agree that this room should be functional at the least.

Take a look at how you can declutter your kitchen in just 5 days WITHOUT getting overwhelmed......

While decluttering during this time, also work on breaking the habits that's been keeping it cluttered.

DAY 1

JUNK DRAWER & COUNTER CLUTTER

This one seems simple enough. We're just tackling that catch-all drawer and clearing your counter of those old sales papers, piles of junk mail, appliances you don't use on a regular basis, and dirty dishes. Seems simple, but the key is keeping it up!

Are there always stacks of mail on your counters? Try keeping an aesthetically pleasing basket on your counter, place mail there when coming in the house, make it a point to sort through it before bed.

Have your family to join in. After dinner, create a routine for everyone to make sure their plates are in the sink. Even if you're too tired to get them done that night, it will look much better and be contained.

I have to be the one to tell you, you don't need all those appliances on your counter! I turned a cabinet into an appliance storage. It's still close by and easy to access when needed. Store them in your pantry or in a cabinet but get them off your counter.

Grab a trash bag and let's start on that junk drawer. Once we get it all sorted, you're going to head over to your closest dollar store and pick up a few drawer organizers. Once you've filled the drawer, throw out all the extras.

DAY 2

PANTRY & FOOD CUPBOARD

Grab a few trash bags because today, WE'RE THROWING IT OUT! For day 2, go through all the food cabinets, pantry, fridge and get rid of any and everything expired and items you'll never eat. It's been in there forverrrr, you're not gonna eat it, throw it out!

Let’s really take it up a notch. Taking food out of the boxes and bags you purchased them in and organizing them in bins and containers will take your space from meh to WOWZERS!!!!

DAY 3

CLEANING SUPPLIES & KITCHEN LINENS

You've made it to Day 3 and you're halfway there! (Do a happy dance) Today, we get a handle under your kitchen sink and on that drawer that won't close filled with kitchen linen.

Here's a few things you can do to contain your cleaning supplies:

1. Sort through and see which supplies you liked and will actually use, set those aside and discard the others properly. (Read the labels on bottles)

2. Purchase an under the sink organizer (Amazon will be your best friend). Be sure to measure for the right height and to accommodate your pipes. Purchase the best choice based on the items you typically have.

3. If you do not have an area to store back stock, do not over purchase. Buy what you can store.

No one, and I mean no one, needs that many kitchen towels and potholders. Take everything out of the drawer. Sort items by categories, dish towels, potholders, towels, etc. Discard the ones that have been ruined by grease, ripped, or ones that belonged to your old kitchen themes. We all remember the apple themed kitchen! It's time to donate it.

You may be looking around and don't have much left. That's okay, we'll add it in our budget.

DAY 4

POTS/PANS, UTENSILS, & EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

We'll either agree or agree to disagree on today's tasks! Let's rip the band aid off....

When it comes to plates, bowls, utensils, plastic ware........it should be a matching set. Before you decide to skip Day 4, hear me out. Matching items helps with uniformity, storing, and is aesthetically pleasing. Your tubber ware cabinet is in disarray because your items don't stack, and the tops and bottoms don't match. When you empty the next butter container, throw it out!

Let's go through and match tubber ware bottoms with their tops and toss the ones whose match is long gone. It may be time to take it up a notch, toss it all, and invest in a new set.

Complete this same process for your pots, plates, bowls, utensils, and serving spoons. These are all items that can be donated to your local church, shelter, or Goodwill.

You deserve a matching plate set!

DAY 5

DEEP CLEANING & DECORATING

YOU DID IT! WOOHOO!!

By Day 5, your kitchen should look and feel lighter. Just in case life happened and you weren't able to complete some tasks from day 1-4, we're gonna use this time to do so. If you get pass this week, you won't do it.

Take some time now to complete those tasks. Once you're done, begin cleaning. That’s right, we've decluttered and now it's time to clean. Wash the dishes and put them away, sweep, mop, wipe down, etc.

Take a step back and look at your freshly decluttered and cleaned kitchen! Wow, you did a great job!! If you're anything like me, you have some motivation to redecorate a little. You already know, at D'Cluttered we love to take it up a notch. Head over to your favorite store and grab a new plant to add on the counter, a new matching dish liquid and hand soap dispenser, or some new towels to hang on your stove. While you're there don't forget your matching basket for your mail.

See you on aisle 4...
